Just so you know, this does contain spoilers.
When I first saw this book at Barnes and Noble, I was in the mood for a scary, creepy story that would make me shake in fear. So, you can imagine how excited I was when I saw this book with a creepy looking girl that was floating on its cover. The back cover even wants you to kind of think the children on the island are crazy by saying, "They may have been dangerous." and "They may have been quarantined on this island for good reason." Yet, once you read the book, it is neither creepy or too scary (there are some kind of scary parts.) So while I should have been disappointed, I wasn't because it is such a good book, it doesn't have to meet my necessity for books that make me wet myself.
Really, it is a very complicated story , but here's the basic summary: Jacob Portman decides to go to this island called Cairnholm because his dying Granfather told him to go there. He goes to the island and discovers this passageway to another time. There, he meets Mrs. Peregrine and the peculiar children. They are not evil murderers ready to eat your brain, as I thought when I read the back cover, they are regular children with awesome and weird abilities, like controlling bees and lighting their hand on fire. They are hiding in this time from monsters called hollows and each day repeats itself, so it is the same day after the same day and so on. He tries to help them as the monsters try to capture Mrs. Peregrine. READ THE BOOK.
It really is a captivating book. Honestly, my favorite part was not when he was fighting against the hollows, but when he and his, kind-of girlfriend, Emma flirt with each other. Also I think it is so awesome how the author collected all of those weird photos and based a story off of them. My least favorite part is when they kind of stall at the beginning, before leaving for the island, by talking about his job family and friends. It could have been made a lot more interesting, if there had been more action, but it was all just talk and I was kind of getting antsy by the time they reached the island. Like a lot of books, the beginning can be boring as they try to introduce the characters as best they can.
So while the back cover is misleading and the beginning is a little boring I still give it a four star (which is a pretty good rating for me.) They introduce the theme well and once he gets to the island, all the action and mystery begin. I am already reading it's sequel, Hollow City and I can't wait to evilly destroy- I mean rate it. I hope you read this book and enjoy it as much as I did :)
